Walburga vs Tobias + Black Family Things
So I read this post, which inspired me to write this ramble.
When I write a fanfic, I always write Walburga to be the one with power in her and Orion's relationship, with her even sometimes going as far as to groom him (yuck!) because she's older than him by 4 years, so was maybe manipulative enough to convince him to marry her to keep things 'pure'. Walburga loved having power, and what other way could she have lordship unless it was through her husband? Taking it from him, even. Regardless of gender, there's a power dynamic. If Orion was 16, Walburga was probably 19-20. This goes against another headcanon I've made, but food for thought.
When I write Tobias it can get complicated, because I want more than just 'abusive dad'. There is the possibility that Tobias very much loved Severus, but they weren't on speaking terms because of the whole magic thing. I don't think we're even aware of the real reason they didn't get along. We can assume it was magic, but what if it was something else? What if Tobias occasionally got in trouble with the police? What if he was bad with money and the landlord was threatening to throw them out if they didn't find a solution? Maybe the biggest problem Tobias had with Eileen isn't the fact that she was a witch, but the fact that she presumably hid it from him? Deceived him? "If this is what you're hiding from me, what else are you hiding that I don't know about?" I also headcanon/believe that Severus was autistic, so maybe Tobias was really lost on how to communicate with him.
The Black Family Itself (Mostly headcanons)
I like to believe Sirius was raised to be a carbon copy of Walburga by Walburga herself, but she was too successful, which ended up back firing on her. He inherited all her rebellious traits because he was modelled after her. I like to believe Sirius' obsession with tormenting Severus started out of his own insecurities, but soon began to become a power thing. Sirius enjoys feeling power, at least I like to believe so.
Just because Sirius surrounded himself with 'mudbloods' doesn't mean his family's views on them magically disappeared from his mind. He could easily be keeping any rude comments to himself. He did maintain his friendship with James out of rebellion as well, not to say they weren't true friends.
I like to believe it was Pollux's side of the family that inherited the madness, and thus it spread to Sirius and Bellatrix. Both of them had to deal with the pressure of being the oldest, and being the face of their families, so they must always be ready. Always high strung, smug and confident. I think that Bellatrix was specifically married to Rodolphus because she was the strongest out of her siblings. The Lestranges didn't treat women well, so if it ever came down to it, Bellatrix would set Rodolphus straight before he could ever lay a hand on her. She's ruthless, and all too willing to go off the deep end if it means getting what she wants. She and Walburga have that in common.
Cygnus II having Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa during his school years (+ Pollux having Walburga) actually sets up a tone for an interesting, yet messy story. The fandom dismissing it as Rowling getting her maths wrong is actually so boring, and they refuse to experiment with what's written in canon. If you guys are interested, I have experimented. (Not to be that person that advertises, but my name is CruelBritania on Ao3). I think Cygnus ended up being a little distant, but also involved with his daughters. He wanted to live his life freely, but also be there for his daughters. Being a teen dad is chaotic, and I guess his relationship with Druella was messy, because she kind of resented him for not being there enough. Cygnus isn't treated seriously because his parents had to help him raise his children. Even at an older age, he's immature. He never truly knows what to do, and always runs to his parents for help. Bellatrix was closest to her grandparents anyways, but Andromeda grew to resent his absence. Narcissa was a mommy's girl, so she didn't really care.
Regulus is the opposite of Sirius, which makes him an Orion copy. He doesn't rebel out of lack of control, but because he genuinely believes he should. That's why he died the way he did. Sirius was erratic, whilst Regulus was calm and collected. Regulus the embodiment of what a Black was supposed to present themselves as.
Arcturus didn't approve of the whole Voldemort thing, but Regulus was obedient to his mother. As I said, the Blacks loved power. Infiltrating the Death Eater circle was Bellatrix's and Narcissa's husband's job, not a heir's. He was suspicious of Voldemort, and what his intentions could be for the future of magical Britain. Being a descendant of Salazar Slytherin and speaking parseltongue doesn't make you special, it makes you worthy company.
The very second he learned Regulus took the mark, Arcturus knew it wasn't going to lead to anything good. He had to embrace that his family's long history was coming to an end. He watched as his family's influence became forgotten as The Boy Who Lived rose to fame. Magical Britain became more open to muggle influence.
I think the family having sexist views isn't too out of place, but I don't believe they were against the women having independence. For example, Elladora and Cassiopeia were unwed for their entire lives. The women of the family possibly acted like Genghis Khan's daughters, which is to get married to a prince and then send them off to war, while the daughter rules the kingdom in her husband's absence. In this case, infiltrate a family and spread their influence through their husband regarding their occupation. If I remember correctly, the Black family were known for being influential. The women were just as important as the men.  Not enough to be heirs, but still very important.
I don't think the Black family took the Hogwarts house thing too seriously. Yeah, they were competitive, but at the end of the day, these are just traits that they valued. They still married into non Slytherin families if the surnames are anything to go by (Macmillan, Potter, ect.). When Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor he wasn't disowned for it, unlike Marius who got burnt off for being a squib. Who even knows if Marius was killed or given away? Phineas and Cygnus were brothers, so maybe Phineas ended up caring for Marius. Who knows?
I believe that not all of them had extreme views on muggles and muggleborns. Some of them preferred to be segregated, others didn't mind their presence so long as they remembered their roles in life, while a handful did believe in exterminating them. Racism comes in levels, after all. Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa are classic examples of this, with Andromeda learning that her family's beliefs on muggles are ridiculous, and even going as far as to marry one. They were normal every day people, in a 1950s white power kind of way.
I headcanon that the hatred the Blacks had for muggles wasn't too bad until they started losing some family members to them (marriage, witch trials, ect.), and only then did their resentment for muggles become more prevalent. How is it that some family members were able to have enough empathy to fall in love with mudbloods and blood traitors? Support muggles? They have madness, but they're not all heartless.
Here are some of the headcanons I've made:

Severus getting into potions.
There are many perks of mastering potions. One of them being spiking your dad’s alcohols with a variety of them and observing the outcomes🌝

That has to be dark magic
Random Slytherin, walking by: I heard your dad's a muggle, Snape! Is that true? Are you a mudblood?
Severus, shouting after him: No, my dad is a wizard, he is really good at transfiguration!
Lily: *raises her eyebrows*
Severus, shrugging: He really exells at turning beer into domestic violence.

AU where my version of the Prince family lives, and Tobias isn't a jerk but is still hot-headed. After the prank families' meeting: Orion: Almost losing a half-blood isn't such big of a deal to- Tobias, pulling out a gun: Let's check if losing a pureblood's head is such a big deal.

WELL DONE
pairing : prof!severus snape x prof!fem!reader
genre : fluff
summary : as hogwarts’ newest professor, you’re facing lots of challenges, including snape’s constant sarcasm and interruptions. but behind his sharp remarks lies, a softer side you never expected to find.
it had only been a week since you’d joined hogwarts as the new professor of charms, and already you were beginning to wonder if you’d made the right decision. it wasn’t the students; they were surprisingly manageable, even the weasley twins. nor was it the workload, which, while demanding, was something you could handle.
no, the real problem was snape.
from the moment you arrived, professor severus snape had made it his personal mission to make your life as irritating as possible. whether it was his pointed remarks in staff meetings or the way he always seemed to find a reason to hover near your desk in the staffroom, he was relentless.
“professor,” snape’s deep, clipped voice broke through your thoughts as you sat at the staffroom table, grading essays.
you didn’t bother looking up. “what's now, snape?”
“you’ve spelled levitation incorrectly on your board during every third-year lesson this week,” he said, his tone dripping with mock disappointment. “i suppose precision isn’t a priority in charms anymore.”
you glanced up, narrowing your eyes at him. “i don’t recall asking for your feedback,” you said.
he tilted his head slightly, his dark eyes glinting with amusement. “consider it a professional courtesy,” he said, the smirk playing at his lips enough to make your fingers twitch.
you sighed, setting down your quill. “do you have anything better to do, or is pestering me just your new hobby?”
snape leaned against the chair opposite you, his arms crossed. “it's not pestering, professor. i’m merely ensuring that the students receive… adequate instruction.”
“how kind of you,” you replied dryly, your gaze locking with his. “and here i thought you were just bored.”
his lips quirked into a small, humorless smile. “boredom has nothing to do with it,” he said, his voice softer now but no less irritating. “though i must admit, your reactions are… amusing.”
you rolled your eyes and returned to your grading, determined not to give him the satisfaction of another retort.
but, of course, snape wasn’t finished. “how are you finding hogwarts, professor?” he asked after a moment, his tone feigning polite curiosity.
“aside from certain professors?” you said, not looking up. “quite enjoyable.”
“mm,” snape murmured, his voice laced with dry amusement. “i’ll try not to take that personally.”
you finally glanced up, meeting his gaze. “oh, please do.”
to your surprise, his smirk softened slightly, and for a brief moment, he looked almost... fond. but the moment passed quickly, and his usual aloof expression returned.
“very well,” he said, pushing off from the chair. “i’ll leave you to your marking. do try not to misspell anything else.”
you huffed as he swept out of the room, his robes billowing behind him. despite the irritation bubbling in your chest, you couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at your lips.
later that evening, as you made your way to your quarters, you found yourself thinking about snape. sure, he was annoying, but there was something oddly… engaging about him. the way he always seemed to seek you out, the way his sarcasm was never truly cruel, and the way his dark eyes softened, just slightly, when he looked at you.
you shook your head, dismissing the thought. there was no way snape was anything more than an annoyance. and yet, as you opened the door to your quarters, you found a small, neatly folded piece of parchment sitting on your desk.
unfolding it, you saw a single line, written in an elegant, precise hand:
you’ve improved. well done.
you stared at the note, your heart skipping for reasons you didn’t quite understand. and for the first time since you’d arrived at hogwarts, you found yourself looking forward to seeing snape again.

Maybe it was Eileen he heard talking shit about Muggles. Eileen, who married a Muggle and gave up her entire world for that Muggle—who lowered herself to live in a shitty neighborhood, in a shitty house, surrounded by shit, all for that Muggle. Eileen, who could have had a decent life in the magical world but ended up not even being able to buy her son clothes in the Muggle one—all because of a man. The same man who yelled and was violent and scary and made her existence miserable. So Eileen probably told her son how amazing the magical world was compared to the hellhole they lived in, the opportunities he could have, and how good it would feel to be among people like him—not among those Muggles who only brought misery, poverty, and violence.
Because Eileen is often portrayed as a helpless victim and fairly loving toward Severus, but I prefer to think she also contributed to her son's cognitive dissonance, to his resentment, and to his obsession with becoming someone in the magical world. That precisely because of the trauma and personal drama, she wasn't in any condition to be a functional mother, nor was she particularly emotionally close. And maybe, over the years, Severus felt torn between a certain affection for her—because, after all, she hadn’t been a total piece of shit like his father—but also a deep internal resentment for feeling like she had never truly protected him, despite being a witch and having the upper hand.

Severus Snape headcanon ideas
He has a journal that was gifted to him by his mother before he went to Hogwarts.
He writes everything in that journal. His thoughts, his feelings, ideas for potions, and spells, along with poetry. He even does little sketches in the journal (they're not half bad)
Ever since the marauders entered his life and his own house doesn't like him all that much, halfway through his first year at hogwarts, he casted a bunch of spells and runes on his journal so that way no one other than himself can open or see what is written inside the journal
The first page is titled "Property of the half-blood prince."
Severus never goes anywhere without it. He also casted a charm on it so that way whenever it's stolen or missing from his person, it will appear right next to him, in his bag, or in his hand
His journal also had dried plants and flowers from his journeys through the forbidden forest
The journal is very old and is held together by magic, pure determination, spite, and a dream (😂). Plus, he cherishes that journal
No one (I do mean NO ONE) has ever seen the inside of Severus's journal, including the marauders, his parents (his mother one time was granted access), his house mates, and even Lily
He once had an old walkman that he found in the streets and managed to fix it up from remembering, seeing how his father used to fix up machinery before the abuse
When he has a train compartment to himself, he immediately falls asleep (it's his only moment of peace!!!!!)
He secretly found the room of requirements that turns into a potions lab for him. He uses it for potion experiments
His experiments with potions have both literally and figuratively blown up in his face.
Would talk with the paintings of Hogwarts
Would find jewelry in the most random places and often wear some of them after he resizes them and cleans them
He loves dark and milk chocolate, along with raisins, and vanilla
Learned occlumency and legilimens very early in his Hogwarts years and has used it on more than one occasion
When he was a child, he couldn't dance to save his life, but McGonagall taught him everything she knew
He and McGonagall play wizards chess together
Before the bullying started, he secretly wanted to be James and Sirius's friend, but after they insulted his mother's house, that thought immediately vanished
Despite being very skinny, he throws an incredibly strong punch
If he did have an animagus form, it would either be a raven, crow, cat, or bat
He would brew health potions for the sick people in Cokeworth or those who couldn't afford decent medicine or medical attention. He became their young doctor and gets paid a bit on the side
Has done a lot of odd jobs in Cokeworth to help keep his home afloat
Whenever Tobias would kick him out, he would originally crash at the Evans home, but ever since the 'Mudblood' incident, he started crashing at some of the people he helped at Cokeworth's homes
He would wish he was born into the Evans family instead of the Snape family
Loves art and poetry
Has read chemistry books at the Muggle Library
He learned how to cook and bake when he was a kid
After the 'Prank' incident, he and Remus talked and have kinda sorta made amends, but there is still a wall (and rightfully so)
He loves science fiction, dark romance, romance, adventure, tragedy, poetry, fiction, horror, Gothic literature, action, and mystery, both films and books (mostly books)
Secretly loves the story of Hades and Persephone.
Will make Blancmange every Christmas at Hogwarts (hphm made this canon)
He has tried to deny rumors about him being in love with Lily and him being a vampire or a bat, but it came to a point where he was done and didn't care
His scent would be herbs, flowers, old books, and rain
